Chicago Nutritarian

A practical guide for living in a non-nutritarian world.

Month: January 2017

Weigh-In 1/29/2017

Today’s weight: 161.2. That is a an 11.8 loss in 4 weeks and 2 pounds since last week. And this past week was challenging because it included travel for work and dinner out with friends. But I stuck with the program and everything worked out fine. I can’t wait for another week of healthy eating!

Salad Beauty

I was eating my lunchtime salad and it was so beautiful I just had to take a picture. The purple cabbage is what really makes it. I have a head of purple cabbage in my fridge and every time I make a salad I slice off a small wedge, chop it up and add it… Read More Salad Beauty

Ronny’s Steak House

What is a nutritarian doing at Ronny’s Steak House? First of all — it’s not what you think. Ronny’s Steak House isn’t some fancy place — it is an old-school Chicago restaurant that serves big platters of made-from-scratch Chicago favorites in a semi-fast food environment. Even before becoming a nutritarian I was not a big meat… Read More Ronny’s Steak House

Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal

I’ve tried different ratios and this is the one I like. It is amazing to me how far 1/4 cup of oats can go! The apple gives it sweetness without added sugar, especially when your taste buds have adapted to not eating things with lots of sugar. I think a dash of vanilla would also be great… Read More Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal

Today’s Menu 1/15/2017

I was at home today so no picture of food in little boxes ready to take to work. My menu: Breakfast: Italian soup (I often eat normal food for breakfast), pear Lunch: giant salad of romaine lettuce and spring mix with oranges, radishes, grated carrots, peas, purple cabbage, red onion, and asian soy-ginger dressing; also some… Read More Today’s Menu 1/15/2017

Weigh-in 1/15/2017

Today’s weight was 164.8 which means I have lost three pounds this past week. Again this is amazing because all I have done for the past week is stuff myself with fruits and vegetables and beans. This means I have lost 8.2 pounds so far. Dr. Fuhrman promotes something on his website called “10 in… Read More Weigh-in 1/15/2017

Creamy Mushroom Soup

I made this last night and it turned out so well that I wanted to add it to my recipes. I have actually tried several recipes these past two weeks that did NOT make it to the blog. No utter fails, just things I want to try making a little differently to see if they could be… Read More Creamy Mushroom Soup

Today’s Menu 1/13/2017

It’s taco salad day! Obviously this salad is very different than my taco salads of the past, but I’m excited about it nonetheless. For the dressing I mixed together 1/2 cup of Chi Chi’s salsa (the lowest salt brand at my store), a teaspoon of taco seasoning, and the juice of one lime. It tastes… Read More Today’s Menu 1/13/2017

Today’s Menu 1/11/17

Last night after dance class I had some “Prince Edward’s Medly” as a snack, so I’m including it in today’s photo since I’m likely to have it again tonight. “Prince Edward’s Medly” is a frozen vegetable mix I got at Aldi. I’ve never seen a mix like this before — it has green beans, yellow… Read More Today’s Menu 1/11/17

Today’s Menu 1/10/2017

A few new things today: oatmeal for breakfast and Moroccan Stew Wrap for supper. This seems like two grain servings but I’m counting each one as a half serving. For the oatmeal I used 1/4 cup old fashioned oats, 1/2 chopped apple, about 3/4 cup water, cinnamon, and three chopped dates which I microwaved for… Read More Today’s Menu 1/10/2017

Today’s Menu 1/9/2017

All weekend I couldn’t stop thinking about cantaloupe, and today I finally have some (buried under the strawberries) along with, of course, a nice big salad. Supper is not pictured because I expect to be home for supper. Breakfast, a banana and an orange, are also not pictured due to having already been eaten when… Read More Today’s Menu 1/9/2017

Weigh-In 1/8/2017

Today’s weight was 167.8, which means I have lost 5.2 pounds in this first week of the six-week-plan. During my days of calorie counting I was happy if I lost one pound in a week — so this number seems amazing, especially since I basically spent the whole week stuffing myself with food. So far… Read More Weigh-In 1/8/2017

The Plate is for Salad

I had two friends over for dinner last night and I kept it nutritarian style. I served a Moroccan-style stew with chick peas, cauliflower and carrots in a tomato-based sauce, and large green salad. I didn’t have my normal lunchtime salad that day so when I was setting the table I was looking at the salad bowl wondering… Read More The Plate is for Salad
